Memorial Day weekend in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was made for family vacations. Not only can you and your crew enjoy the start of the summer season and all the fun in the sun that comes with it, but the Grand Strand also keeps the true spirit of the holiday alive with a series of patriotic events to honor America's fallen servicemen and women. Pack your red, white and blue summer attire, and book your reservations at The Breakers Resort for a vacation filled with family fun and patriotic tributes. Here's a list of activities you don't want to miss this Memorial Day weekend in Myrtle Beach:

* Book Bookend Weekends: Travel-industry experts call them “bookend weekends,” but at The Breakers Resort, we just call it smart planning. By staying a little longer than a week, you can hit two big weekends on the Grand Strand in one trip. Arrive the weekend before Memorial Day, and you can visit the 36th Annual World Famous Blue Crab Festival in nearby Little River, or start your vacation on Memorial Day and you can check out the 62nd Annual Sun Fun Festival the following weekend. But the main draw is the monthlong Military Appreciation Days, which culminates in several big events on Memorial Day weekend. Whether you come for the whole week or just for the three-day weekend, make sure to check out some of the special Memorial Day weekend services listed below.

* Military Appreciation Days Parade & Picnic: This family event takes place at The Market Common's Valor Memorial Park, which serves as a tribute to the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. The parade route runs down Farrow Parkway beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 27. The patriotic procession concludes with an appearance by grand marshal Alek Skarlatos, the Army National Guard Specialist who helped subdue a gunman on a train bound for Paris in 2015, earning him the U.S. Army Soldier's Medal and the French Legion of Honour. The parade is followed by the Family Picnic from noon to 2 p.m., with Valor Park hosting live music and military exhibits, and serving burgers, hot dogs and drinks.

* Military Appreciation Days Golf Tournament/Dinner & Dance: Thursday, May 25, serves as an all-day shindig for veterans, active-duty military members and civilian supporters of the U.S. Armed Forces. The day begins with a 2 p.m. shotgun start at The Heritage Club in Pawleys Island for the Military Officers Association of America Golf Tournament. The entry fee is $80 per player or $300 per foursome, with a $5 discount for veterans. For those who prefer dancing over golf, the Military Appreciation Days Dinner & Dance will be held at 6 p.m. at the Myrtle Beach Sheraton. Featuring dinner, live music and dancing, the event is sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America but is open to all military branches and all eras of service. Tickets are $30, and social hour begins at 6 p.m.

* Veterans March and Remembrance Ceremony: Guests at The Breakers Resort won’t have to go far to catch the Memorial Day Veterans March on May 29 at 9 a.m., with hundreds of vets marching down Ocean Boulevard and to the old Pavilion site for a brief ceremony. A more formal service is set 11 a.m. at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, which is also a short walk away from The Breakers Resort. The Remembrance Ceremony features speakers and an honor guard salute.

Of course, there are lots of other activities for guests at The Breakers Myrtle Beach Resort to enjoy during their Memorial Day weekend getaway. Enjoy our oceanfront tanning lawn and pool deck with a wide range of aquatic attractions, or explore the Grand Strand for a variety of summertime fun. It’s all part of a perfect Memorial Day weekend in Myrtle Beach.
