During a Grand Strand vacation two years ago, Todd Baker proposed to Sarah Blencowe and the two decided it was only fitting that they get married in Myrtle Beach.
Romantic? Yes. But for mother Nancy Blencowe, who was charged with organizing the affair from her home in New York, the pressure to produce a perfect wedding seemed overwhelming ... until she found The Breakers Resort. Last Saturday, the event went off without a hitch.
"Everything was perfect - the ballroom, the ceremony, the food," said a relieved Blencowe. "The Breakers staff did a phenomenal job. Santana (Leroy, a wedding coordinator at The Breakers) was unbelievable. She had everything under control so we could relax and enjoy the wedding."
After combing the Internet for potential locations, Blencowe booked the wedding at The Breakers nearly two years in advance. After going through the various packages that are available through The Breakers, she put together a game plan and let Leroy handle the rest.
"As it turned out, it wasn't stressful for me because she took care of everything," Blencowe said. "She called me about two weeks before the wedding and she was genuinely nice and helpful and enthusiastic. It was wonderful having someone like her walk me through it. Anything we needed or wanted to change, she was there to take care of it."
The Breakers' wedding coordinating staff took care of every detail, but they have no control over the weather. The conditions appeared poised to rain out the outdoor portion of the festivities, but Blencowe got a little help from above in the nick of time.
"My father passed away and I was asking him for help with the weather," she recalled. "There was an 80 percent chance of rain and it started raining right before we were supposed to go outside for pictures. I said, 'Dad, I'm counting on you.' Then just as we went out the sun came out and it was beautiful, and it held off until right when we were going back inside."
Blencowe said the newlyweds were particularly impressed by the courtyard and ballroom they used for the wedding, the reception and to take photographs before and after the ceremony. She said the guests were impressed by all aspects of the resort, but especially the food.
"We had a lot of people come in from out of town, and we don't get the same kind of fresh seafood up there that you get down here," she said. "So we chose seafood for the reception and it was excellent. We had more than 100 guests, some of whom had never been to Myrtle Beach before, but after this week I'm sure they will be coming back."
Including the happy couple, which will continue to celebrate anniversaries and make many more memories in Myrtle Beach in the future.
