Pour a Julep and Celebrate the Kentucky Derby in Myrtle Beach
The Kentucky Derby is too good of an event to ignore, even if you can’t be there. The hats, the clothes, the sports, the horses … it’s an American institution! And the beauty is, you don’t have to be in Kentucky to celebrate, you can get your Derby on right here in Myrtle Beach.
This year, as it has for decades, the prestigious Kentucky Derby will be held the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs. The race is the capstone to the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival, which dates back to 1935. The Derby, also known as the “Run for the Roses” in honor of the blanket of roses that’s laid on the winning horse, is the first leg of the Triple Crown. Derby traditions are arguably the most fun export from the race: The official drink of the derby is the mint julep, often served in an ice-frosted silver cup, and spectators dress in fine outfits topped with extravagant hats.
Want to get in on the Derby fun without the hefty price tag of going to Churchill Downs? This year in Myrtle Beach, Castano’s will be hosting its own Kentucky Derby Party!
The party will be held on Saturday, May 4, at Castano’s Italian steakhouse at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach. You can expect appetizer specials all night long and Derby pie for dessert. The Derby will be shown on large HD TVs, and prizes will be awarded for best dressed and for best hat. Having trouble finding a good derby hat? Bijuju at Barefoot Landing and the Highway 17 Tanger Outlet are offering 30 percent off derby hats from April 15 through May 3 for party guests. All you have to do is say “Castano’s sent me” for the discount.
